About the Event

Writing SURPRISES AND DISCOVERIES

In the midst of the day to day, we encounter surprises – small and big -- that make us look again at what we thought we knew with certainty. Surprises alter the way we see our landscape. They redirect our future. Sometimes, they even redirect our relation to the past. Sometimes, we look past surprises because we can’t figure out how to readjust in the ways they ask us to do.

How do we recognize and incorporate new knowledge – sometimes painful or challenging knowledge – when we encounter it? How can we write about these experiences to allow them to come across with all the intensity with which we feel them in real life?

This workshop will look closely at literary models and offer participants a chance to experiment with writing exercises suitable to writers of any genre. No previous experience is necessary. Texts may include: The Gospel of Trees, by Apricot Irving; Home, by Marilynne Robinson; Grace Paley; The Magician's Elephant, by Kate De Camillo.
