About the Event
Sometimes our own worlds shift dramatically on the basis of small or coincidental moments: a word spoken or not spoken, a memory, a chance vision on the street. In this workshop, we will take our cues from a few texts that offer us a picture of critical events that made large changes in characters’ or memoirists’ lives, yet were events of such small scale that they might not even have been noticeable to others. How do big events (such as a birth or death, a move, a change in status, a war) balance with relatively small events (such as a conversation, a train ride, a book that comes our way, finding an object that had been lost) to direct and re-direct our lives?
The course will be conducted in two parts and will consist of discussion of pre=circulated texts and writing in response to prompts. Participants will have the chance to share work if they wish. Readings will be distributed upon registration and may include: “Holiday,” by Katherine Anne Porter; “Lucy Gayheart,” by Kathleen Hill; Payback, by Mary Gordon
